Most instructions to add a stamp to a PDF begin by assuming you own Acrobat. If you do, the Stamp tool is under Tools and it works. This is the version for everybody else.
To stamp a PDF online takes a couple of minutes in a browser, needs no install and no account, and the file never leaves your machine: the PDF is opened and rewritten where you are sitting. Here is the whole job, then the three things that go wrong when people do it another way.
How to add a stamp to a PDF, in five steps
- Open the document stamper and choose your PDF. The file is opened in your browser and is not uploaded anywhere.
- Pick the stamp, or design one on the spot.
- Drag it onto the page, in the place it actually goes, at the size it should be.
- Set the date if the stamp has one.
- Download the finished PDF.
That is the whole job. It costs $2.00 for the finished document, paid at the download with an email address rather than an account, and nothing at all on a paid plan.
Why dragging matters
Tools that offer a corner ("top right, bottom left") get it wrong on the documents that most need a stamp: an invoice with a footer, a contract with a signature block, a certificate with a border. The stamp has to go where the space is, and only the person looking at the page knows where that is. Seeing the pages and placing the mark yourself takes ten seconds and removes the risk of covering a figure.
The transparency problem
A stamp copied from a screenshot or exported without transparency lands as a white box with a ring drawn inside it, hiding whatever it was placed over. The fix is the file, not the tool: use a transparent PNG or an SVG. Every stamp downloaded here is transparent by default, and the white-background version is a separate file in the pack for the occasions when you want it.

Getting the size right
A stamp on paper is between 35mm and 45mm across. On an A4 page that is roughly a sixth of the width. Marks scaled up to twice that read as a graphic rather than as a stamp, which is the giveaway on a document somebody is meant to trust.
Keeping the date honest
A date drawn into the image is a picture of a date: correct on the day it was made and wrong forever after. Two better options:
Set the date at placement. The stamper fills in the current date and lets you change it, so the date on the file is the date on the document.
Keep the date as text. The Word file in the download pack keeps the date and any serial number as real text you can retype, which is what an office reusing the same stamp all year needs.
Word and Excel too
The same page takes a .docx or an .xlsx. The stamp is placed on the rendered page in the same way and the file comes back in its original format.
If the PDF is a scan
A scanned page is an image, so a stamp placed on it sits on top of the picture and behaves exactly the same way. Nothing extra to do.

Questions people ask
How do I add a stamp to a PDF for free?
Designing the stamp is free and needs no account. Placing it on the document and downloading the stamped file costs $2.00, or nothing at all on a paid plan. Nothing is uploaded: the PDF is opened and rewritten in your browser.
Can I make a PDF stamp without Acrobat?
Yes. Acrobat's Stamp tool is one way and it is not the only one, and a PDF stamp without Acrobat is the ordinary case rather than the workaround. Any tool that can draw a transparent image onto a page and save the result will do it, and doing it in a browser avoids installing anything.
Why does my stamp have a white box around it in the PDF?
Because the image has no transparency. Insert a stamp in a PDF as a transparent PNG and the page reads through it; a digital stamp on a PDF that arrives as a white card is almost always a JPEG or a pasted copy. A JPEG cannot carry any, and a PNG copied through the clipboard loses it. Insert the transparent PNG file itself rather than pasting a copied image, and the box goes.
Can I add a stamp to a scanned PDF?
Yes. A scanned page is an image, so the stamp sits on top of it and behaves exactly as it would on a text page. There is nothing extra to do.
