Which stamp file format to download, and why there are six of them

Picking a stamp file format looks like a non-question until the day a submission portal rejects your PNG and asks for a TIFF. Here is what each format is genuinely for.

Each one exists because something in the world asks for it by name: a document, a printer, a sign writer, a drawing office, or a government portal with a fixed intake form. Here is which is which, and the short answer at the end if you would rather not read the list.

Make this stamp in the editor

PNG, the default

Use it for: documents, email, web, anything on screen.

PNG supports transparency, which is the property that makes a stamp sit over a page rather than in a white box on top of it. Downloaded here at print resolution, so it holds up when the document is printed.

The pack also carries a white-background PNG, for the occasions where transparency is the problem: some older systems render a transparent image as black.

JPG, for the system that will not take anything else

Use it for: upload fields that reject PNG.

JPG cannot do transparency, so the stamp arrives on a white rectangle, and its compression softens fine lines. It is in the pack because some systems accept nothing else, not because it is a good choice.

SVG, the vector

Use it for: scaling to any size, sign writing, embroidery, anything that will be enlarged.

SVG stores shapes rather than pixels, so it is equally sharp at 20mm and at two metres. It is also the format a designer will ask for.

PDF, for print

Use it for: sending to a printer, or dropping into a document as a page.

A print-ready page with the stamp on it, at the size it is meant to appear. Nothing is resampled.

EPS, for a print shop that asks by name

Use it for: commercial printers whose intake form lists EPS.

Plenty of print shops still ask for EPS and will not proceed without it. It is in the pack for exactly that conversation.

Word, the one that keeps the date editable

Use it for: an office that stamps documents all year.

The .docx keeps the date and any serial number as real text rather than as part of the picture, so the next person can retype them. Insert the file into your document rather than copying the stamp out of it: copying can leave the text behind.

TIFF and DXF, the CAD pair

Use them for: drawing offices, and portals that specify .tif.

TIFF is a lossless raster at print resolution, which is what some government and engineering portals demand by name. DXF is the stamp as linework, real size, R12, so it can be inserted into a drawing and plotted rather than pasted as a picture. These two come in the CAD pack, at $6, because they are a different job for a different buyer.

The short answer on stamp file formats

If you are stamping documents, take the PNG: $1.50. If you do not yet know where the mark will end up, take the pack at $3 and stop thinking about it. If you work in a drawing office, you already know you need the DXF.

Formats are chosen at download in the stamp maker. Prices are on the pricing page.

Questions people ask

Which stamp file format should I use on a PDF?

A transparent PNG stamp, in almost every case. Transparent digital stamps for PDF work because the page reads through the ink; PNG stamps on a white background do not. It places in any PDF editor and the text underneath still reads around the ink. Use the print-ready PDF version instead only when the whole document is going to a press.

What is the best stamp format for printing?

The stamp SVG if the printer will take it, because it is the true vector and rescales with no loss. An EPS stamp is what a print shop most often asks for by name, and it is in the same pack. The PDF and the EPS are the ones most commercial print workflows accept without question, and both are rendered at 2400 pixels across, comfortably past 300 dpi at seal size.

Which format keeps the date and serial editable?

Only the Word file. Every other format is a picture of the stamp, so anything on it is drawn in. In the .docx the date, the time and the serial are real text you can click into and retype.

Can I download a company seal template in Word format?

Yes, and the Word file is the one where the date and the serial stay editable text. High resolution digital stamps to download come in the same pack: the print PNG, the PDF and the EPS are all rendered at 2400 pixels across.

Do I need the TIFF and the DXF?

Only for two situations: a portal that lists TIFF and not PNG, where a TIFF stamp is the file it will take, and a DXF stamp for CAD, where the seal goes onto a drawing or to a die cutter. They are in the CAD pack rather than the standard one because most people never need either.
