What is a digital stamp? A plain definition, and four things it is not

A digital stamp is an image of an official mark, built to be placed on a file rather than pressed in ink on paper. It carries the same wording a rubber stamp would carry, the company name, a title, a date, sometimes a number, and it is saved in a format that can sit on a page without covering the text underneath.
That is what a digital stamp is, and that is the whole digital stamp definition. Everything else people mean by the phrase is one of three other things, and the difference matters the moment somebody asks you for one.
What is a digital stamp, in more detail
A stamp is a statement of who is speaking and what they are saying about the document. "Received, 8 September, by the accounts department." "Certified true copy." "Approved by the site engineer." The mark is not the message: the wording is. The circle around it exists so the wording reads as official rather than as a note someone typed at the bottom of the page.
A digital stamp does the same work in a file. Three properties are what make it a stamp rather than a picture:
A transparent background. The area around the ring has to be see-through, or the stamp lands as a white box that hides whatever it was placed over. This is the single most common reason a stamp looks wrong on a PDF.
Print resolution. A mark that looks fine on screen and blurs on paper has failed at the one job that survives from the rubber version. A stamp meant for print needs to be built at print size, not scaled up from a screenshot.
Fixed wording, with the changeable parts marked as changeable. The company name never moves. The date does. A stamp that bakes today's date into the picture is wrong by tomorrow morning, which is why the date is worth keeping as text.
What it is not
It is not a digital signature. A digital signature is cryptography: a certificate, a private key, and a check that tells a reader whether the file has been altered since it was signed. A digital stamp is a picture. It says who is speaking, it does not prove anything mathematically. Both are useful, and they answer different questions.
It is not an electronic signature in the legal sense. An electronic signature is any mark adopted with intent to sign. A stamp beside a signature is common practice, but the stamp is not the signature.
It is not a scan of a rubber stamp. A scan is the usual first attempt and it is a poor one: it arrives with the paper's grey behind it, it is crooked, and the date on it is whatever day the scan was made. It cannot be edited, so a new one is needed every time anything changes.
It is not a watermark. A watermark sits behind or across the whole page and marks the status of the document (DRAFT, COPY, CONFIDENTIAL). A stamp sits in one place and makes a specific statement.

Where the term comes from
The physical stamp is a die, a raised mirror image of the wording, pressed into an ink pad and then onto paper. The digital version keeps the vocabulary: the ring text is the wording curved around the outside, the centre block is the lines in the middle, and the impression is the finished mark. Those words are still useful, because they are how a stamp is described when somebody orders one.
Making one
Designing and previewing is free here and needs no account. Type the wording, choose a shape, set the ink colour, and the preview is the real output rather than an approximation. You pay only for the file: $1.50 for a single format, $3 for the pack with the vector, PDF and Word versions in it.
For the vocabulary in full, the stamp glossary defines the terms one at a time. For putting the finished mark on a document, see how to add a stamp to a PDF.
Questions people ask
Is a digital stamp the same as a digital signature?
No. Digital stamp vs digital signature is the confusion this article exists for, because the words look alike and the objects are not. A digital stamp is a picture: it shows who marked a document, the way an inked stamp does. A digital signature is cryptography: it proves a file has not changed since it was signed, and it has no appearance at all until software draws one for you. A document can carry both, and on anything high value it usually should.
What does e-stamp mean?
The e-stamp meaning depends on the country you are reading in. In India and a few other markets an e-stamp is a government-issued receipt for stamp duty, bought through an authorised portal, and nothing on this site produces one. Everywhere else the phrase is used loosely for an electronic stamp image, which is what this article is about.
Is a digital stamp legal on a contract?
A stamp is evidence of who marked a document rather than the thing that makes it binding, so in most commercial settings a digital one is treated the same as an inked one. The exceptions are the marks somebody licenses: notarial seals and professional seals, where the board or authority decides what it accepts.
Is it legal to make one?
Making a mark for your own organisation is ordinary practice. Stamp-Seal is a design tool, so this describes common commercial practice rather than giving legal advice, and what a notarial, professional or medical mark must carry is set by the authority that issued the commission, registration or licence: check the requirement with them. Only produce a mark you or your organisation are entitled to use, since a stamp carrying somebody else's name or a licence you do not hold is forgery wherever it is filed.
How do I create an e-stamp online?
Design and preview it in the online stamp maker with no account and no time limit, which is what a custom electronic stamp creator amounts to.
Is there a free online digital stamp creator without a watermark?
Nothing is overlaid on any file you download here. The live preview carries a faint mark so a screen capture cannot replace the purchase, and the export is redrawn from the design rather than captured from the screen.
How do I make a digital stamp for free?
Design and preview it in the editor with no account and no time limit. The charge is for the file at the end: $1.50 for one image format, $3.00 for the pack with every format in it.
