Are digital stamps legal is the question that comes up before every first download, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a marketing one. Stamp-Seal is a design tool, so what follows describes common commercial practice rather than giving legal advice: it is descriptive rather than advice, the detail differs sharply by country and by document type, and the authority that asks for the document is the one that decides what it will accept. Where a document matters, check the requirement with them or take advice.
The short version is that the mark is rarely what makes a document valid, and where a stamp is required the requirement is usually about who applied it and to what, not about whether it was pressed in ink. The rest of this sets out where that holds, where it does not, and what makes a digital mark more likely to be accepted.
What a stamp does legally, and whether a digital stamp is valid
In most jurisdictions a stamp is evidence, not an instrument. It records that a particular organisation marked a document, and when. What makes a contract binding is agreement between the parties; what makes a copy certified is the certifier's statement and their willingness to stand behind it. The mark is how that statement is presented.
Which is why "is a digital stamp legal" usually resolves to a different question: does the person receiving this document accept it?
Where a digital stamp is normally accepted
Internal marks. Received, approved, paid, filed, checked. Nobody has ever needed these in ink.
Invoices, quotes, letters and reports. The stamp identifies the sender.
Copies sent by email. A document that will only ever exist as a file is better served by a mark made for a file.
Where it needs more care
Deeds and instruments executed under seal. Some jurisdictions have specific rules about execution, witnessing and, in a few cases, the physical impression. If a document says "executed under the common seal", check the rule that applies to it.
Notarial acts. A notary's seal is regulated. Several jurisdictions now permit electronic notarisation with a registered electronic seal and an audit trail; several do not. The notary's own commissioning authority is the source of truth, not a stamp maker.
Court filings, land registries and some government portals. These publish their own file requirements, sometimes down to the format. That is why the CAD pack exists: portals that specify a TIFF are not being difficult, they are being specific.

The abolished-seal confusion
Several countries removed the legal requirement for a company to keep a common seal years ago. The practice did not go away with the requirement, because banks, registrars, overseas counterparties and older forms still ask for one. Both things are true: it may not be required by law, and you may still be asked for it.
What actually improves acceptance
A mark that matches the register. The registered name, spelled as registered, with the registration number.
A real date. A date set at the moment of stamping rather than baked into an image last year.
A sequence number, where the mark is used repeatedly. A stamp with a serial that never repeats gives you something to point at when a document is queried.
Consistency. The same mark on every document from the same organisation.
One thing that is not a grey area
A stamp is only yours to use if you are entitled to use it. Making a mark that carries a professional body's name, a notary's commission, a government department or another company's registration, when you hold no such licence or authority, is impersonation, and applying it to a document is forgery. Every jurisdiction prohibits it, and no wording on a design tool changes that. Design marks for the organisation you actually act for, and for the credentials you actually hold.
Serial numbers are covered in serial numbers on a stamp. For what belongs on the mark, see what goes on a company stamp.
Questions people ask
Are digital stamps legally binding?
A stamp is rarely what makes a document binding: the signature and the agreement do that. What a stamp does is evidence who marked the document and in what capacity, and a digital mark evidences that as well as an inked one in most commercial settings.
Is a digital company seal valid?
For ordinary commercial paperwork an electronic company seal is treated like an inked one, and it is what survives a document being emailed. Where a specific counterparty, registry or bank has a policy, that policy decides, so ask before the document matters rather than after.
Is an electronic seal the same thing in law?
Not in the European Union, and the distinction matters. Under eIDAS an electronic seal is a specific legal instrument issued to a legal person by a trust service provider, closer to a digital signature than to a picture. Everywhere that electronic seal law applies, the mark this tool makes is an image of a seal and not a qualified electronic seal. On digital seal legality generally, that is the line to keep in view: the image evidences who marked the document, the trust service proves it.
Can I use a digital stamp on a contract?
Commonly, and it is the usual practice now that contracts travel as PDFs. The care is needed on instruments executed under seal, on notarised documents and on anything a regulator names, where the requirement is about who applied the mark rather than how.
Is it illegal to make a company stamp online?
Making a mark for your own organisation is not. Making one that carries somebody else's registered name, or a licence number you do not hold, is forgery in most jurisdictions and the file it came from does not change that.
